Our first partnership and trial brought a Los Angeles based medical cannabis producer from barely sustaining itself, to profitability. Since that initial success, further trials of Sunscape LED systems have been implemented by growers in Oregon and California. Two are featured here, as well as our work at our Oregon Innovation Center, the R&D testing facility for Sunscape LED systems.
Using exclusively Sunscape LED grow lights, the Innovation Center consistently produces cannabis with 28% THC and 3% terpene content. The two partner case studies of Sunscape LED systems cited below were carried out under controlled conditions, including strain, genetics, watering cycle, light cycle, temperature, and fertilization.
Our initial partnership trials were exclusively HPS vs. LED, and cultivators have seen for themselves the difference in yield between HPS vs. LED grown plants. But we haven’t stopped there – beyond our controlled case studies, the Innovation Center continues to expand with further testing of LED lighting while incorporating varied cultivation methods.
Our 2018 LED grow light solutions, and future iterations will offer more flexibility, automation, and the latest semiconductor materials. LEDs are the future, and we are invested in that future.
Case Study #1
DogHouse Supreme Cannabis:
27% increase in THC
Jon Hudnall and DogHouse Supreme Cannabis, 5 time Dope Cup award winner is an Oregon and Washington State-based grower enthusiastic about experimentation and innovation in growing techniques.
DogHouse dedicated a flowering room to SUNSCAPE LED. SUNSCAPE’S testing at DogHouse was extensive, providing consultation for DogHouse and further data for SUNSCAPE beyond a standard trial. DogHouse’s grower, coming from a medical background was previously only accustomed to growing larger plants, even with LED lights he’d tried in the past. Considering this was ONLY a test of the flowering stage, and the clones used in the SUNSCAPE trial were not of the best quality to begin with, what followed was eye (and nose!) opening.
All DogHouse strains showed considerable improvement with SUNSCAPE lighting, most notably their Scoobie Snacks strain which grew by 27% in THC (19.49% HPS vs. 24.81% LED). Terpene levels set a record high for DogHouse at 5%.The SUNSCAPE and DogHouse teams also noticed that DogHouse’s “Wet Dog” had a 12% THC increase. “Slymer” when grown under SUNSCAPE lights increased by 7% in THC. SUNSCAPE and DogHouse consistently produced over one gram per watt.
Case Study #2
A Therapeutic Alternative:
45% increase in yield
A Therapeutic Alternative is a medical grower in Sacramento. SUNSCAPE LED again conducted a trial of their LED systems against the grower’s HPS lighting. The director of A Therapeutic Alternative was initially skeptical of making the transition to LED technology, but she also saw the potential benefits of moving to a more cost effective and environmentally friendly solution.
In the trial, a single HPS PL 1000 watt light was replaced with a SUNSCAPE LED 6 bar unit operating at 660 watts. After harvest the director reported 1.79 pounds grown under the SUNSCAPE LED lights vs. only 1.20 pounds under the HPS light – an increase of 0.59 pounds (a total dry weight increase of 45.49%!). The director was thrilled to see the increase in yield. A Therapeutic Alternative has since switched out their entire HPS lighting system for a SUNSCAPE LED modular lighting solution. SUNSCAPE LED, as partner and manager of Kanaba Farms (The Oregon Innovation Center) in Salem, OR, collaborate daily with our expert on-site growers. Kanaba provides SUNSCAPE with a space to collect ongoing, pertinent data, run tests in controlled environments, and build community with our partners. Kanaba is pesticide free, uses constituents from organic sources, and integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
